RE: 1000w Honda Generator and Battery Charging

Hi, The tent trailer is a new (2008) Starcraft trailer so, bearing in mind what you said, do we need to buy a battery charger or can we just plug the tent trailer in to our generator and leave that to charge the battery ?

1000w Honda Generator and Battery Charging

So, after the helpful advice from this site, we bought a Honda 1000watt generator. We are now learning that this on its own won't actually charge the battery on our trailer tent. We have been told we need to get a battery charger too. My question is this: Our generator has a max output of about 6 amps I think. We were told to go for a minimum 10amp battery charger. However, will this work on our generator. I'm guessing that if it charges at 10amps, it must draw at 10amps as well and so would not work on the Honda 1000 as it only has a max amp output of 6 amps? I've also got a couple of dumb questions. :o When we are plugged into a 15 or 30amp hookup and we are not using the electricity in the trailer, will our battery be charging? When we have the generator running and the trailer tent plugged in to the generator, will our battery be charging then? Man, I never knew this would be so confusing. :?

RE: How do I know when I'm running out of PROPANE?

You can pour hot water over the take and it will show you a frost line. Sorry to sound dumb, but whats the 'take'?

How do I know when I'm running out of PROPANE?

We only have one propane tank on our trailer tent and don't want to add another tank as we don't want to increase the hitch weight. Is there a reliable way of telling how much propane you have left? Do they sell propane gauges that tell you how full the tank is or is there another way of finding out (other than running out and having no heat or cooking facilities !)

Vehicle storage in BC

Does anyone know of a place that offers vehicle storage at a reasonable cost. We are off on a 6 month trip soon and want to store our Dodge Caravan while we are away. I have been to a few self storage facilities but they charge too much for vehicle storage.

RE: Buying Hitch locks / Wheel locks in Canada

http://www.tirelock.com/product.php?cid=1 Does it have to be from The Great White North? I think so, I've looked at quite a few US websites and the shipping costs just rule out buying from the US.

RE: Honda 1000 watt generator or 2000 watt generator?

Wow - thanks for all the advice! We will go with the 1000 watt generator. This forum has been so helpful to us, being complete rookies at this (we have only camped in a tent before)! One other thing, the sales guy said we should also buy an external deep-cycle battery charger as the generator is not designed to charge deep-cycle batteries - is that right ? So now for a really dumb question, how does a generator connect with teh trailer, do we just plug in the electric hookup plug to the generator - is it that easy ?:o

Honda 1000 watt generator or 2000 watt generator?

We have been looking at generators for our trailer tent. We have visited a few shops and heard the various generators running and we ruled out most of them for being too noisy. We heard the Honda EU1000IC today and were quite impressed - however, the sales man said the max amperage is 7.5 - would this be enough to run the fan on the furnace? The shop also have the EU2000IC in stock but we think it might be a bit noisier and its $400 more expensive. Anyone own/ have any experience of either of these generators. We don't expect to be using much electricity - just a few lights and the furnace fan. Thanks, Vicki

RE: Buying Hitch locks / Wheel locks in Canada

Well so far... we tried Fraserway RV but they don't have wheel locks (we have bought a hitch lock) we tried Canadian Tire but they don't have any wheel locks... we tried Walmart in Capilano Mall and they don't have any wheel locks ... will just a hitch lock do the job ???

Buying Hitch locks / Wheel locks in Canada

Hi, does anyone know a good place to buy a wheel lock and/or hitch lock for a tent trailer. I have found plenty of websites but I haven't found many that ship to Canada. (We live in Vancouver) Thanks Vicki

RE: Solar v Generator

I've checked out the generators on ebay - its a "Powerking Digital Inverter 1KW 1000W Silent Generator" They are about one-third the price I am being quoted for a Honda or Yamaha. Has anyone every bought one of these generators. Would like to know how they perform and also how noisy they are. Thanks !

RE: Solar v Generator

I think the $650 was a price in the US - I've put out a couple of email enquiries with local traders and should get a quote on a price in Canada shortly. :)

Solar v Generator

We are planning a 5 month trip round BC and are just about to pick up our trailer tent. Having checked out some of the campsites we would like to visit we are finding that the ones that appeal to us tend to be the ones without any hookup facilities. We are completely new to all of this - the trailer tent is being fitted with an RV 27 battery (whatever that is ??). We don't intend to use much electricity - the main use will be the fan on the furnace. Any idea how long we could dry camp for with just the battery? Would a solar panel or a generator be the best way to go? We have looked at some generators but are a bit concerned about (a) how heavy they are (we are rather tight on the weight issue) and (b) whether they would be noisy and disturb other campers. However, we aren't sure how much more 'life' a solar panel would give our trailer tent battery. Any advice?

Cupboard storage in trailer tent

Hi, We are very excited to be picking up our new Starcraft trailer tent next week. We had a good look in all the storage cupboards and wondered what was the best way to transport belongings in the trailer tent. We were thinking we could stock the cupboards with our basics, (cutlery, sauces, tins etc) but didn't know the best way of doing this. We have used plastic boxes with lids before when camping in a tent but it becomes a nuisance having to open plastic boxes to hunt for the thing you are looking for. We were thinking of maybe adding some fitted shelves inside the trailer's cupboards because most of them are tall but narrow so we are thinking this would double the cupboards capacity. Rather uninteresting topic I know, :D but would like some advice as we don't want to transport our belongings in the trailer and then when we arrive at the campsite find everything broken or leaking in the cupboards. Thanks folks !

Kettle Valley Cycling - Campsites

We are planning to start our 6 month camping trip in the Kelowna region and would like to cycle some of the Kettle Valley Railway. Thing is, there is so much information on the KVR that I am finding it hard to choose a particular section /area to focus on. Has anyone cycled the KVR and if so, do you know of any good campsites near to the KVR. Thanks

RE: Anyone tow with a Mitsubishi Endeavour

Thanks thats reassuring. The tongue weight of the unloaded trailer wil be 256lb. We don't plan to put much in the trailer, will carry most of our stuff in the car.

Anyone tow with a Mitsubishi Endeavour

Hi all, We are still worrying about towing capacity ! We have a 2007 AWD Endeavour with a tow capacity of 3,500lbs. The Mitsubishi dealership fitted a hitch but it says on there 'do not fit a weight distribution hitch'. Obviously, the WDH will lessen the strain on the car so we just want to hear from anyone who has towed with a Mitsubishi and how it handled. Also, whether they had a WDH fitted. We are looking to buy a trailer tent weighing about 2,200lbs, Thanks !
